AK - ChaBuDuo
The song 差不多 "ChaBuDuo", originally titled "Doctor Doctor (Am I in love?)", was one of 4 tracks from our first ever demo CD, and bears the honour of being our first ever commercial release. Admittedly, it was a bit of a silly song, but nevertheless it caught the attention of various music publishing companies. They seem to like that kind of teeny-bopper stuff in Asia. Disclaimer: that awful guitar riff in the song - we didn't write that!

In the end, the song made it's way to 郭富城 Aaron Kwok at Warner Records in Taiwan via Universal Music Publishing in Hong Kong. Although we were somewhat elated (as AK was a big star), we were slightly perplexed at the same time, since we had always felt that the song was really for a teenage girl. As they say, "You just never know..."

Released in May 2000, it was chosen as one of the first singles to promote Aaron's new album (旅途:愉快 Journey:Cheer) in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. A cute MTV video was made for the song (check out the download section), and there's even a dancing game featuring the track! It also made it into the later released Warner year 2000 compilation album (Singapore version only).

Finally, special thanks to Sandie Chia for her excellent singing on the original demo!

May 20th 2000 Real Player broadcast of the song in the CRHK Radio chart countdown, with a funny DJ's voiceovers (in Cantonese). We are number 12 in this clip - the song eventually hit number 2 on this chart.

Lyrics taken from the album, with the people involved in the production of the track. Pity they got KL's name all wrong (here and elsewhere)!!

 Reviews
We've mustered together some online reviews of the album/track here:
Sharon's (a fan of Aaron's)
Freddie's (slightly biased) review
On the tune
It's pretty OK (ahem...)! Though in our "friends test", it had the lowest average score among all the songs on our demo CD. Strangely enough, it was the only song that was picked (by multiple publishers). Must be the teeny-bopper appeal?!

On the lyrics

Even though my Chinese isn't that good, I thought it was pretty OK (ChaBuDuo!). It's cute, and fitted well to the tune. Especially the chorus part, where the lyricist stuck to our "o - o - o -o" bit with the Mandarin lyrics "doh Cha Bu Duo- o - o - o - o". Catchy, that ChaBuDuo...

On the production (by Jim Lee)
I was impressed with the production on this track: clean and crisp rhythm section especially. Jim had mentioned that he kept it "raw", which meant throwing a couple of musicians into a room and cutting it pretty much live. The only negative comment I have is that the thrashing guitars were a bit too heavy for my liking, and the main riff they played (not on the original demo) weren't too interesting neither. And I was disappointed that the guitar solo was just a repeat of the intro riff. The guitars in the chorus were excellent however. Our version had a more boppy verse with a jumpier bassline. I guess Jim was trying to "masculinize" the song by making it less boppy and girly. And perhaps the less funky verse was a better contrast to the happy chorus, making the chorus stand out more. I was actually impressed by Aaron's singing on this track and in the whole CD in general. The backing vocals were decent also - brilliant extra-bar lead-in to the chorus.
On the MTV Video
Cute video, though obviously very Asian in genre. Suitable for the market I guess. Aaron looked good in it, though my attention was somewhat distracted by the digital doll in the tight pants!
On the other tracks on the album
I liked track 3 "Sorry I loved you" a lot. Cool groove. Title track 1 "Journey" was excellent also. Tracks 2 , 8, and 9 were"nice". The rest were OK but a notch below. Hated track 5 "Go For It"...
On the dancing game
Hadn;t tried it myself yet, but I hear it's all the rage over there. I think I would fall over a lot ...
